Five life-changing foods
Five life-changing foods

From alligator meat, laverbread, yerba mate, cupuaco to acai, Andrew Zimmerman of the Travel Channel tells TODAY's Meredith Vieira about foods that will improve your health and well-being.

TODAY SHOW

Today on NBC featured Andrew as part of its special on "5 Things That You Never Heard of That Could Change Your Life." Andrew introduced Meredith Vieira to 5 foods that are not eaten profusely in the United States but that are coming into popularity. Here's the link to the clip: Five life-changing foods

We've been getting a lot of questions about what foods Andrew mentioned on the show and where the heck to get them, so we've provided you with the list along with links and tips on where to get these super foods:

Alligator

Look in your grocer's freezer section. Right now, most alligator meat is frozen to retain freshness because popularity isn't high enough to keep fresh meat in your butcher's section. Most likely you will find meat from the tail which is white and tender with little cooking. Alligator meat from the center of the torso is darker, tasting more like pork shoulder than chicken, and does better with longer, lower heat cooking. The alligator sticks that you saw on Today were from Alligator Bob's website, http://www.gatorbob.com/, which also offers more information on this reptilian treat.

Laver Bread

Laver bread, or nori, is easy to find in any Asian supermarket. Most often it is sold in sheets to make sushi. You can also check out any sushi bar to find this super food. To make the traditional Welsh oatmeal and laver bread cakes, check out the article on the site for A Chef's Table with Jim Coleman from Chicago Public Radio. Here's the link:

Açaí Berries

Açaí one of the easiest super foods to find. From ice cream to juice to smoothies to supplements, acai is coming up everywhere. Keep your eyes peeled in your grocery store and check out natural food stores for a wider selection. The products on the table that Andrew highlighted were from Sambazon.

Yerba Maté

Yerba Maté can be found, again, in most grocery stores in the tea section. If you have problem finding it, try a natural food store. For more information on nutritional benefits and facts, go to Yerba Maté Online.

Cupuaçu

Unfortunately, this superfood isn't as widespread in the United States although the health benefits are off the charts. As Andrew said on the show, there was difficulty in procuring cupuaçu for the show. The restaurant in New York that finally provided the puree and desserts was Churrascaria Plataforma.

And get this, there is a juice that combines three of these five superfoods! Check out Fruta Vida to get the goods and for a mountain of health benefits info.
